Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has assured management of University of Cape Coast that his office will ensure the early completion of an ongoing School of Graduate Studies office complex at the university.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh gave the assurance upon a request made by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah at the 17th Session of the 50th Congregation of the University for Graduate students last Saturday.

According to the minister, his ministry finds it a responsibility to ensure the GETFUND project, which is almost nearing a halt, is completed on time to enhance Postgraduate education in the University.

“…This year has been a stressed year for GETFund but out of the stresses are opportunities and one of the opportunities is to help you complete your post graduate centre. I can make that promise”.

He also charged the university to open up its frontiers to be able to admit more students who will be completing senior high school saying “I hope if the promises are complete there is a reciprocal promise on how you are going to expand access to the free senior high school students who will be knocking on your door in two years to come. So as we free those classrooms… I think it becomes another portal for more admissions into your school”.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh advised the graduates to be agents of change by positively impacting society with the knowledge gained. He again called on the graduates to form a formidable force of an association which will serve as a networking platform geared towards supporting their Alma mater.

The Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Coast, Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah in his report said, as part of measures by the University to improve its graduate programme, 12 new demand-driven programmes which are yet to receive accreditation have been introduced to its existing stock of 391.

Professor Ampiah said the current enrolment of graduate students in the university is not appreciable causing the university to mount strategies to increase the number of graduate students in the university.

In all, one thousand, one hundred and four students (1,104) graduated. The number consisted of 54 PhDs with the rest being Master’s degree and post graduate diploma and certificates.

The Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid who gave the valedictory address at the ceremony eulogised the University  of Cape Coast saying “If I have to come to this world again for a University education, I will choose UCC again. His speech was intercepted with thunderous applauds from the gathering. Mustapha Hamid charged his colleagues to be agents of change by using their knowledge gained to impact society.
